The Knottery: A review….
My ties from the Knottery arrived yesterday, so naturally I was anxious to check them out and get a feel for the quality and see what all the hype is about. I ordered three ties from their latest collection and this is my first time ordering any product from them. Here are my first impressions…..
The Preacher (Black Watch): I really like this tie. It is 3” in width which to me is the absolute perfect width on a tie. Not too skinny and not too wide. The four in hand knot comes out very nicely. As you all know, I love black watch but my favorite thing about this tie is the material that it is made of. The cotton feels quite significant and is thick but not TOO thick for a cotton tie. The “nubby” texture is just so damn unique. It just gives this black watch tie a different look that sets this one apart from any old cotton black watch tie. Its something that you need to see in person to truly appreciate it. Now it is a cotton tie, so I personally will be making good use of this tie more in the spring and the summer. The black watch pattern on this tie is a little lighter in color so that also lends itself to S/S usage.
The Longshoreman (Norwegian pattern): This tie is slightly slimmer in width. It is 2.75”. I am fine with that. The material is pretty solid. The tie is actually much lighter in weight than I pictured. That isn’t necessarily bad because when a tie is too thick it makes even a four in hand knot too thick (in my opinion). The gauge of this material still allows you to produce a perfect size knot (See Eric’s post here). I am curious to see how this tie will hold up long term. I am worried that it may get snags in it and maybe get fuzzy over time. The material seems to be good but not great upon first inspection. We’ll see. Overall I love the tie. It is very different and has a definite winter feel to it. I will be wearing this every time I get a chance to this winter.
The Water Carrier (solid navy blue knit): I can’t wait to wear this tie! A navy blue knit tie is a wardrobe staple. It goes with almost anything and is always appropriate. The cable knit pattern on this tie just makes it very unique and breathes a little life into the simple navy knit tie. The material is 100% wool and is quite significant. It is really thick. The only downside is that I am going to have to figure out how to make sure my knot doesn’t come out too large. In the pic above, that knot is larger than what I usually prefer. This is a tie that I hope to have for a very long time and I don’t longevity will be an issue with this one.
Conclusion: The Knottery is a top notch company in my opinion. I had a slight issue at first (I never received a shipping confirmation even after a couple of days) which was quickly addressed after I sent them an e-mail. I also made two separate orders (which was my fault for being indecisive) and they gladly combined the shipping for me and refunded the shipping cost of my second order. Jack answered me back promptly I was more than pleased with how he handled the issue. Jack and Jay are gentlemen and they are running a great organization. Their products are made in the USA, they are of great quality, their products are offered at a price point that everyone can afford ($25.00 per tie!!) and their customer service is top notch. I will definitely be ordering more ties from them in the future.
